Masjid Al Haram - Great Mosque of Makkah

Masjid Al haram is located in the great city of Makkah. Allah mentions Makkah as a "mother of All cities" in Quran. Masjid Al haram also known as Al haram. It is the largest mosque in the world.

The history of masjid Al haram dates back to the time of prophet Ibrahim عليه السلام and prophet ishmael عليه السلام. They both built the Kaaba together. While Kaaba is the original mosque , later it was expanded to accommodate larger worshipers. so they expanded the mosque around the kaaba. Click here to know more about Kaaba.

Now masjid Al haram has the capacity to accommodate up to 4 million worshipers during hajj. It is now 356,000 sq m (3,830,000 sq ft) and constructions underway to expand it to 400,000 sq m (4,300,000 sq ft).  It is compulsory to visit masjid Al haram for a pilgrim who intended to perform Umrah or hajj.

Landmarks of masjid Al haram

Masjid Al haram is a masjid built Surrounding the Kaaba. The masjid includes the Kaaba , maakamu Ibrahim, haatim, zamzam well, and Safa, Marwa mountains. The picture below details the landmarks of Kaaba. Read this article to know more about Kaaba.

Zamzam well is located at the east of the Kaaba.The safa mountain is located further east from the zamzam well. Note that zamzam well is covered due to expansion in the mataf area in the masjid Al haram. You will notice a Landmark written zamzam in Arabic. That is the precise location of the zamzam well. Now the mosque Authorities using modern technology to pump the water out of the well.

Further to the east of the Kaaba, you will find the mount Safa. Where you would start performing sa'i.

The library located near marwah mountain is said to be the place where prophet Muhammad was born. It is known as bayt Al-mawlid.
Dār Al-Arqam, the Islamic school where prophet Muhammad  first taught, was flattened to lay marble tiles.


Entrance to masjid Al Haram

There are more than 90 entrance gates for masjid Al haram. If you are staying near the clock tower or if you are staying in hotel located at Al akyad street. You are most likely to enter through gates from 1 to 12.

1. Masjid Al haram is masjid which includes the Kaaba which is the first place for worship.
2. Masjid Al haram is located in Makkah , where Allah mentiones it as the mother of All cities.
3. One prayer offered in masjid Al haram is equivalent to 100000 ( hundred thousand) prayers offered elsewhere. - Prophet Muhammad
